Registry of Deeds

At the Registry of Deeds documents that relate to real estate (property) ownership are recorded and searched.  Documents are accepted for recording based on Maine State Law, most generally found in Title 33 of the Maine Statutes.  The Registrar of Deeds is elected by the people of Somerset County and is responsible for recording documents as prescribed by these statutes.

Our major function is to make available, for all time, the information that proves ownership and interest in every piece of property in Somerset County.

Documents such as, deeds, mortgages, liens, discharges, assignments and certain court documents just to name a few, are entered into public record in the order they are received.  They are made available to the public through a paper and electronic index.  The Registry is used every day by many individuals; banks, credit bureaus, lawyers, title companies, genealogist and independent researchers.

Documents can be searched in person at the Registry from 1809 to present.  We are located at 41 Court Street in the Superior Court Building in Skowhegan.  Our on-line web search has records from 1956 to present and is available at www.mainelandrecords.com

The Registry is a very interesting place.  We invite you to come in and see what we do.  We are open Monday - Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
